The path of each document is different, having multiple signers and different senders. Knowing how to add and remove recipients on an envelope is essential to ensuring a document reaches the right people. Knowing how to adjust the routing order of each document is also important to make sure the document reaches each individual at the right time. Here are step-by-step instructions to help you understand how to accurately alter recipients and routes of any envelope.

Looking at your home screen on, you can start by choosing “Start a New envelope” or “Send” to upload a document.

This will lead to a screen to prepare a new document for signature. From here, a document can be uploaded from a computer or off an online database. A reusable template can also be applied.

Once a document has been successfully uploaded, the next step is to add any recipients to receive the document. To add a recipient, type in an email address and name in the blank fields under the “Recipients and Routing” section. Once complete, tap on “Add Signer”.

This recipient will now be shown as the first person to receive the document to sign. This step can be repeated to add more signers to the list.

If this recipient is not signing, but needs a copy of the document, choose “Add CC” after entering an email and name. This individual will receive a copy of the signed document if they are in order to receive the envelope after a signer.

Looking at this example, there is a workflow to the route of the document. A visual of the document’s route can be seen by clicking on “Order Diagram” right below the recipient list.

This visual shows the order of how the envelope will be sent out and received, starting with the sender. The workflow can be altered by changing the order number of each recipient. The order can also be changed by dragging the dotted area next to each order number box upwards or downwards, changing the placement of each recipient on the list.

The recipients can also receive the document at the same time if they are the same order number. The order diagram will reflect any changes.

As recipients are added to the list, there are different sending options, actions, and ways to identify each recipient. By clicking on each option, a drop box will fall with more options to choose from. This will help customize your envelope.

Keep in mind that some of these options are only available in more advanced workflow modules. Different users will have different options to use when altering recipients and routes according to each customized plan.

By choosing either “Address recipients” or “Manage envelope” from the action drop box, the recipient can send out the document to more people without releasing personal information to anyone else. If I wanted to send a document to an agent for a customer signature, this would be a secure way to address the customer without disclosing an email address.  If the email and name are already known, however, this information can be locked to prevent any further changes as the envelope is released.

The routing order can continue to be changed when necessary. Recipients can also be removed from the list by tapping on the “x” icon on the right of each recipient.

Once altering recipients and routes for the document are complete, you can add a personalized message, customize envelope settings, and add signature tags on the document.

In this example, when Agent 1 receives the document after it has been sent, Agent 1 will be able to fill out the email and name to send out to their client (as seen below from the agent’s point of view). This workflow from agent to client can be easily followed by viewing the envelope’s status on your own account.

Routing is a fantastic feature that gives more control to the sender with each envelope.
