The “We Are DocuSign” blog series places the spotlight on employees from a variety of departments and provides a peek into what it’s like to work at DocuSign.
Q: What do you do at DocuSign?
I’m part of our web and mobile business team, which drives the e-commerce channel at DocuSign. We’re responsible for making sure small business owners and sole proprietors find a DocuSign solution to meet their business’ needs. On this team, I help manage our freemium business and work towards ensuring that our free customers have an awesome experience with DocuSign so that they can become advocates of the product and future paid users.
Q: What do your friends and family think you do?
My dad is in real estate so he knows exactly what I do and is super proud to have a connection to DocuSign in our family. He sometimes refers to me as his unofficial business partner, which is both hilarious and great. The rest of my family and friends all know about DocuSign now and tell everyone that “Marisabel’s job is to have fun at a cool tech company in San Francisco”. It definitely ranges based on people’s familiarity with DocuSign, but it’s always a good description.
Q: What is the best thing about working at DocuSign?
The range of projects that I get to work on. Our team tries to be as self-sufficient as possible – everything from sales to marketing to email to phone calls to analytics to campaigns. What’s really cool about my job is that I’m not just doing one thing. It depends on the needs and the focus of that month or that quarter. I’m widening and broadening my skill set every day.
Q: How is that team different than other teams at DocuSign? Is there anything special about your team’s dynamic?
Our team is awesome. We really value one another a lot. We make sure to embarrass everyone on their birthday and bombard their desk with balloons and streamers. We have really fun off sites as well. In fact, we just went kayaking in Santa Cruz and before that, skiing in Lake Tahoe. These group activities help our team become even more close-knit.
There’s a lot of mindshare that goes on as well. If I need help with something I know one of my teammates will be more than happy to help me. And I’m always ready to help someone else. We’re just a really close team. We’re also unique in that we’re responsible for a lot of different elements. We can quickly get a campaign or project up and running without having to depend much on other teams.
Q: What is the best advice you can give to somebody starting a new job in your department at DocuSign?
Always ask questions. It’s really impactful for a new person to come in and see how we’re doing things and question the processes. We’re constantly aiming to grow and learn best practices. Jump in and ask questions because our team is always eager to improve.
Q: What traits do you most admire in your colleagues at DocuSign?
If you work at DocuSign — no matter what department you’re in — chances are you’re incredibly intellectually curious. This natural curiosity is what makes everyone so much more enthusiastic to be at DocuSign. No one takes things for granted or takes it at face value. Most people will see a problem and think, “What do we need to do to improve this?” No one is stale at DocuSign. Everyone is invested and wants to ensure we as a company are doing the best we can to deliver an amazing product.
Q: What traits do you think your DocuSign colleagues most admire in you?
My manager recently told me that I have great relationship skills which helps me strategise and get projects done with diverse teams of people. I really enjoy working on a tough problem and tapping on the subject matter experts of each department to join forces and come up with an innovative solution. I’ve been lucky enough to do this with my projects at work and also with internal employee initiatives. I helped start “[email protected]” in San Francisco and “Lean In” in Seattle along with Alyssa Myers. I enjoy bringing people with unique perspectives together to help achieve a common goal. Whether you’re an engineer or in sales or on the user research team, I look for ways to cater to the different objectives of each team while helping fulfill the overarching goal of a better customer (or employee) experience.
I also try to keep everything fun and positive because, at the end of the day, we’re all in this together. And, ultimately, if you’re having a good time, you’re going to contribute more. DocuSign was my first job out of college and I’ve learned a tremendous amount in the past 3 years — so I try to encourage a lot of the younger DocuSign employees to push the boundaries and put themselves out there.
Q: What is something most of your colleagues at DocuSign don’t know about you?
When I was younger, I was a child actress. I did movies, TV shows, and commercials. My team surprised me at a white elephant exchange by buying a DVD of one of the movies I was in when I was younger. I actually ended up picking it as my surprise gift and the whole team had a good laugh. I laughed so hard I cried. It was great.
Q: What is your favorite snack from the DocuSign kitchen?
I love veggie Wednesdays. On Wednesdays, I probably make 5-6 trips per day to the veggie tray.
Q: Where is your favorite place to work or have a meeting at DocuSign and why?
I really like the Sign & Dine Cafe. It’s our breakroom on the 8th floor. It’s a much more casual environment and makes meetings more enjoyable. Plus, it’s really cozy. I’m happy that DocuSign has given us that space. It can get a little tiring standing at a desk all day, and there’s something really nice about just heading to the Sign & Dine Cafe for a change of scenery.
Q: What is the best project you ever worked on at DocuSign and why?
When we released our Chrome extension, which is basically like DocuSign for Gmail, I was in charge of the entire marketing campaign. But I worked really closely with the product manager, Ryan Hutnick, who brought me on for more aspects of the project. I worked directly with the engineers to whiteboard what the user experience should look like and what features we should add. I even tested the product before we released to make sure users could enjoy it right away. Working on that — from start to finish — was pretty awesome. Especially seeing the impact it had: how many people downloaded it, used it, and the comments we received from our users, colleagues, and our partners at Google.
Q: If you were not working at DocuSign and could do anything in the world, what would you be doing/do next?
Travel. I’ve been dying to visit Asia — especially Hong Kong.
Q: What is the secret for you to happiness?
Living up to your fullest potential. Identifying your strengths and passions and having an outlet to display them or work on them. Everyone has a passion, and if they can focus their energy on that passion, then I believe they’ll be very happy.
