The “We Are DocuSign” blog series places the spotlight on employees from a variety of departments and provides a peek into what it’s like to work at DocuSign. This week, we sat down with Mike F., Strategic Ent. Account Executive, to chat about his day-to-day work, what he admires about his colleagues, and something none of his coworkers know about him.
Q: What do you do at DocuSign?
I’m an account executive in the insurance industry. Basically, that means I work with the largest insurance companies in the world to help them bring their business digital.
Q: What is the best thing about working at DocuSign?
The people and the product. We’ve got great people who I’m always learning from, having a good time with, and working collaboratively with. I love that. Everyone helps each other out. They’re positive, they’re supportive, and they’re mission-driven. They’re working from a place of inspiration. That kind of mentality is contagious. But equally — it’s the product. People love it. There’s real value. It’s fun. It’s easy. People are aware of it. And it just makes sense.
Q: How is that team different than other teams at DocuSign? Is there anything special about your team’s dynamic?
It’s a very cohesive team. Collectively, across the board, it’s “How can I help you?” or “Congrats,” or “Good job.” We work hard and play hard. We do activities together. We signed up for the Chicago marathon and hiked in the mountains in Washington as a team. We’ve gone on all kinds of adventures together.
Q: What is the best advice you can give to somebody starting a new job in your department at DocuSign?
I’d say be enthusiastic. Have fun. Work hard. And ask for help.
Q: What traits do you most admire in your colleagues at DocuSign?
Integrity. Creativity. Discipline. Leadership.
Q: What traits do you think your DocuSign colleagues most admire in you?
Probably my sense of humor. My ability to present in front of an audience and keep their attention and engage them. I do impressions and have been known to do a whole host of DocuSign people and senior executives. And my customers for that matter. I imitate, and I make up what they would say in a humorous way. I think of it as being like a caricature artist: I use certain mannerisms and phrases they say, emulate their tone, but then I create a funny roast out of it. Having a sense of humor has helped me in my sales process.
Q: What is something most of your colleagues at DocuSign don’t know about you?
A lot of people probably wouldn’t know that I used to perform with Second City in Chicago, which is a famous improv theatre. I got to work with Horatio Sanz and Tina Fey back in the day before they did SNL.
Q: What is your favourite snack from the DocuSign kitchen?
I’m remote, but when I’m in the office I really like the fruit and nut bars.
Q: Where is your favourite place to work or have a meeting at DocuSign and why?
When I’m in the office in SF, I usually go to the 10th floor where our CEO sits. I like to work where the CEO is because it’s where all the action is.
Q: What is the best project you ever worked on at DocuSign and why?
Closing the second-largest deal in the company’s history. It required a significant amount of effort from our product team and engineering, support, operations. It involved a lot of people over a three-year period, culminating to that sale.
Q: If you were not working at DocuSign and could do anything in the world, what would you be doing/do next?
First, I would travel the world. I would also volunteer with humanitarian efforts, such as work with New Story. If I had to work and still bring in money, I would be the Tony Robbins of enterprise sales.
Q: What is the secret for you to happiness?
Looking for possibilities instead of problems. Having fun. Being grateful. And probably just taking care of myself with water, food, rest, exercise. The basics of life.
