The “We Are DocuSign” blog series places the spotlight on employees from a variety of departments and provides a peek into what it’s like to work at DocuSign. This week, we sat down with Sam, Talent Acquisition Manager, to chat about her day-to-day work, her favourite project yet, and what she admires about her colleagues.
Q: What do you do at DocuSign?
I am a recruiter for DocuSign’s HR, legal, finance and marketing functions. I partner with different business leaders to help them plan their headcount and how they want to grow their team. Then I help find the talent that will produce the best results for their team.
Q: What do your friends and family think you do?
My family thinks I talk on the phone all day. [Laughs] Some of my friends think I sell people…they’ve heard me in action a few times when I’ve had to work remotely.
Q: What is the best thing about working at DocuSign?
Definitely, the people I work and collaborate with. We have a unique culture that has come from many of the marquee companies in Silicon Valley. We all learn a lot from each other and our experiences. Enjoying whom you work with makes the days go by much faster.
Q: How is your team different than other teams at Docusign? Is there anything special about your team’s dynamic?
We are helping create the culture of DocuSign — and I think that’s a very interesting and exciting place to be. We’re culture-champions. We’re people’s introduction to DocuSign because oftentimes we are speaking to people before they meet anybody else from DocuSign. We’re enhancing our culture with the new talent we bring in.
Q: What is the best advice you can give to somebody starting a new job in your department at DocuSign?
Ask as many questions as possible and get to know your team. We’re all in this together. Everyone is extremely friendly and collaborative. Don’t be afraid to talk to people — especially when you’re new. You should feel comfortable interacting with and understanding what others do.
Q: What traits do you most admire in your colleagues at DocuSign?
Adaptability and intellectual horsepower. There’s a level of flexibility and adaptability necessary when you work at a hyper-growth startup. You have to be able to pivot and chip in when and where needed. That’s what I admire most: we’re flexible and are willing to help even when it’s not necessarily part of our job description.
Q: What traits do you think your DocuSign colleagues most admire in you?
Perhaps my sense of humor. I try to bring levity to stressful situations.
Q: Where is your favourite place to work or have a meeting at DocuSign and why?
I like to work on the 14th floor in the booths! They have little purple restaurant booths. Love them.
Q: What is the best project you ever worked on at DocuSign and why?
I would say my volunteer work with the DocuSign IMPACT foundation. I am the San Francisco chair for IMPACT and have been volunteering with the foundation since soon after it started here at DocuSign. I have helped create and implement company programs that are continuing to grow and make an IMPACT in our local community and around the globe. I am grateful to work at a company that allows you the opportunity to expand your experience beyond your day job. I get to work on my passion project, and I’m fully supported by my management team. I think that’s awesome.
Q: If you were not working at DocuSign and could do anything in the world, what would you be doing/do next?
I would be a travel blogger, and I’d go everywhere! I would do an Australian tour and a Southeast Asia tour to begin with.
Q: What is the secret to happiness for you?
Balance – making sure to take time outside of work to enjoy my people and my life.
